Mobile Phone History
Before, it's simply shouting out loud to get a message heard. Then, transportation, public and private, was devised to ease interaction between people from varied locations. Then came the idea of telephones, those little box-like wonders that allow you to connect to your loved ones from far away with long snake-like cables called wires. Now, the call for convenience is getting even louder, and that call has brought forth the mobile phone.
This may be the story of how the mobile phone is realised, but truth is, the history of the mobile phone is far more complex than this story. So, how, really, did the mobile phone came into existence? Who are the personalities behind it? How did the mobile phone evolve into the innovative little gadget we know of today?
In The Beginning
Way back the early 1900's, the idea of a wireless phone prompted the United States to issue Kentucky native Nathan Stubblefield a patent, with which he developed cave radio phones using wireless technology. Then, come the 1940's, cell and digital technology for wireless phones saw birth. It all began when the engineers of Bell Laboratories, namely W. Rae Young and Douglas Ring, came up with hexagonal cells for mobile phone stations in 1947. In the same manner, a fellow engineer at Bell Laboratories, Philip Porter, devised a hexagonal arrangement for cell sites and 3-D antennas. A year earlier, together with AT&T, Southwestern Bell came up with the first ever commercial mobile radio phone in the United States.
The Mobile Phone Generation: Introduction Of the 0G
The 0G (acronym for zero generation) mobile phones were first brought to the fore in the year 1945. These phones made use of analog cell technology, as described in the United States patent 4152647 to Nevada natives Martin Parelman and Charles Gladden.
Introduction Of the 1G Mobile Phones
After the 0G, the first generation of mobile phones came into existence with the introduction of the DynaTac 8000X by Motorola in 1983. Analog cellular technology is still being used by these kinds of phones. Initially, mobile phones in this generation were designed to be built in cars.
The 2G Mobile Phones
Come the introduction of IS, GSM, and TDMA in the 1990's, the world saw the emergence of the second generation, or 2G, of mobile phones. This time, technology was made digital, and Radiolinja, the pioneer of all GSM networks, was founded. The development of digital technology for mobile phones reduced the size of mobile phones from that of a briefcase to those that weigh only 100 to 200 grams.
Mobile Phones at Present
The mobile phones that the world has at present is the third generation of mobile phones. Basically, what happened is just an upgrading of the systems that are already available. GPRS, EDGE, and CDMA2000 1X systems were developed, as well as more innovative multimedia features.
