History

Founded in 1938 by Lee Byung-Chull, Samsung first started as a trading company in Seoul, South Korea. With only 40 employees, the trading company was doing well until to the communist invasion. Despite the business downturns caused by damaged inventories, Lee moved to Suwon in 1951 as the trading company continued to grow. He then built a sugar refinery in 1953 after the Korean War. Since then, Samsung ventured into other industries such as securities, insurance, and has established several department stores.

In 1969, Samsung Electronics was launched as a company division that produced high-quality electronic devices under the world-famous brand. Samsung manufactured its first computer chip in 1983. In 1992, the South Korean company was cited as a world-leading memory chip producer. Samsung's first LCD display was built in 1995, while CDMA handsets were commercialized in 1996 followed by GSM handsets in 1997. Samsung is one of today's leading brands for home appliances and other cool gadgets, including their Samsung mobile phones.
